In the heart of Melaka, Studio Belatuk had the opportunity to design a new concept store for Akudesign—a local streetwear brand known for its roots in Malaysian skate culture and its dedication to quality, design, and community spirit. Founded by brothers who turned their passion for skateboarding and streetwear into a brand, Akudesign aims to empower its customers to “Wear With Pride.” Since its inception in 2009, Akudesign has steadily grown from selling limited shirt runs to expanding into a full range of streetwear products, including hoodies, headwear, and accessories. With concept stores that embody their brand identity, Akudesign continues to cement its place in Malaysia’s streetwear scene.
The Brief
Akudesign tasked us with creating a design that mirrored their urban, streetwise ethos while fitting seamlessly into the culturally rich landscape of Melaka. This concept store, nestled near the iconic riverside area, needed to offer an engaging yet practical shopping experience. While we faced location-related limitations that restricted us to design-only contributions, our focus was to optimize the layout and bring Akudesign’s vision to life in a way that complements the brand’s vibe and values.

Design Approach
Our design approach prioritized both form and function. Given the spatial limitations, the layout emphasized fluid movement and clear sightlines to each merchandise zone. Strategic placement of custom lighting and materials such as metal and natural wood introduced an industrial feel, while large, open shelving allowed for efficient product display without overwhelming the space. In line with Akudesign’s brand, we integrated graffiti art elements and contemporary street textures that evoke the spirit of skate culture.

Final Look and Feel
Although we didn’t oversee the construction, our design plan lays the foundation for a vibrant, urban ambiance tailored to appeal to both loyal customers and new visitors. With inviting displays, a relaxed atmosphere, and brand-specific details, Akudesign’s new Melaka location is set to be both a destination for shoppers and a cultural hub for the community.
